Spice Up Your Routine

Spice blends are always great to have on-hand. They basically take the guesswork out of making something taste good. You can toss them with vegetables or potatoes before roasting; add flavor to chicken, fish, or other meats; season a soup, stew, or skillet meal; add to a sauce, hummus, or a quick sour cream dip. However, store-bought spice blends can be expensive, and often contain unwanted ingredients like MSG or way too much sodium.

Easy, Delicious, Deli Salads

Produce season is finally here, and local farmer’s markets are starting to fill up with this year’s crop of Minnesota goodness. Summer’s vegetables are meant to be eaten fresh, giving you hydration and the best possible nutrients to nourish and replenish your body from Summer’s heat. Deli salads are a great way to enjoy them! Back to our Roots


For many, quarantining has meant having lots of unplanned spare time. Some have turned to baking, some are working from home, but with fewer hours; and some are re-creating dance routines for social media.

Why not plant a garden? It’s not too late to get those seeds in the ground; or you can find pre-sprouted seedlings at farmer’s markets or other garden stores.

Gathering For Dinner

Minnesota is now ripe for the picking! Amidst the state park forests and trails you will find mushrooms, ramps, leeks, wild asparagus, fiddle-head ferns, and the aromas of spring fresh in the air. Foraging has always been one of my favorite past times: getting fresh air, enjoying the beautiful scenery, and hunting for Minnesota’s treasures. I have always had an affinity toward morels (See my morel butter recipe!) but this year I have found a new obsession: the Pheasant Back mushroom, also called the Dryad’s Saddle. It’s a large, disc-shaped mushroom with a light, delicate flavor — almost like a cucumber or watermelon rind.

A New Twist on the Average Grill-Out

Backyard cookouts are synonymous with summer in Minnesota, andwe are well into the season! Burgers and brats are always great, but why not try something new– like a grilled brat with pizza toppings? Ever tried beer cheese sauce and onions on a brat? It’s delicious! Here are some more brat topping ideas to try. Or invite your friends and have a brat bar with different toppings. Enjoy!
