Cooking Grains in the Oven

Have you ever made rice or quinoa on the stove, only to find the grains over-cooked, unevenly cooked, or even scorched on the bottom? Here is a kitchen tip that will give you perfectly cooked grains, every time. You can use this method for all types of rice, wild rice, whole grains, couscous, and even lentils.

The method is simple:

-Place a shallow layer (about an inch or less) of grain or rice in a casserole dish or 9×12 pan. *Always rinse your grains before cooking!

-Add the recommended amount of water or stock (For most rice or grains it will be 1 part grain to 1 1/2 – 2 parts liquid; but always check the package directions for correct ratio)

-Cover with a lid or tin foil, and place in a 350 degree oven, until the grains are tender-cooked.

-Cooking times may vary depending on the grain and the amount used, but usually it will be anywhere from 20-30 minutes. Refer to package directions for specific cooking times. You can always check on your grains as they cook and add water if needed. The oven will simmer and steam your grains at an even temperature to give you a perfect batch every time.

Note: you can also season your grains by adding aromatic ingredients like chili spices, bay leaves, garlic, allspice, cloves, and onion powder; or, leave your grains plain to season later.

The best part is, grains freeze well so you can cook larger batches, freeze in portions, and cut your dinner prep time in half!
